Memory box time, this one was made as a wedding gift for my niece, and was made from three different woods – Walnut for the two side pieces, Ash for the front and back pieces, then Oak for the lid. For the hinges I used some more of the Walnut, no metal fixing were used on the actual box, though screws were used to fix the name plate inside the lid.

Far too many years ago I bought a piece of wood, it wasn’t a large piece of wood but it had very nice grain, it was labelled Tiger Striped Oak not one I’d heard of but I thought would make a nice box lid. I decided to try and make an oak box without any metal fixings, well, why not 😉 made a few mistakes along the way and there’s still some fettling to do but I’m happy with the result so far. The wood hinges were interesting to make, and I’d probably do them differently next time.

These leaves caught my eye as I wandered through the wood and I decided to stop for a photograph, now I’m wondering if I should go draw them as well. For now I’ll print them out to fill a gap on the wall for a while. Anyway, happy new year everyone, I hope it’s a productive year 🙂
