This week I’ve been working on a bit of web design, it’s a site for a book ‘Climb Black Sail For Me’ based on the far too brief a life of W. N. Hodgson.

It was a fun site to work on, especially trying to create a pen and ink map for the header – actually it was one of those ideas that comes to you and you have to stop everything else until you’ve tried it out glad I did now. Hopefully the website will spark plenty of interest in the book and we’ll see it on the shelves sometime soon, it’s such a shame that people like W. N. Hodgson who in the midst of fighting for his Country in some horrific conditions can still create wonderful poetry yet is not all that well known. A portfolio of doubt

Or should that be I doubt I’ll ever finish my online portfolio I had intended finishing my own portfolio many Moons ago but one thing gets in the way of another and I must admit I get easily distracted – especially by pencils and shiny toys. Anyway, I have received an increased number of messages asking when it would be completed. I was especially pleased to receive the email asking if I was going for the longest running holding page in history as the coming soon page did have a few cobwebs on it So, this week, having lost my voice thanks to a virus and being unable to stand up without watching the World spin about my head (that same fun virus), I decided it was time to put the finishing touches to the portfolio.

It still has a long way to go, and I have loads of images yet to sort out and upload, but it is now online and useable. The good part about this for me at least is I can get back to using the blog part of my site as somewhere to write and ruminate without posting page after page of photographs I am still looking for a good way of getting some of the images as purchasable items, but it’s not something I really want to rush into and start churning out poor quality pieces – when I find a solution I’ll mention it here – if I remember.

I need to crack on with a painting, but as it’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve had chance to paint I decided to warm up a little with a quick painting. I decided to paint a new header for my site – just for winter

Of course, since it’s nearly Christmas I had to tweak it a little

La Communauté Fantastique – Website

The La Communauté Fantastique website is near enough completion to call it finished, it was particularly enjoyable to work on – especially getting to paint the dragon for the logo There is still some work to do adding a few items to the blog section and the gallery looks a little empty right now, but that will soon change

I’ve been playing with a website design for a while now, it’s strange when someone comes to me and asks for a design it’s not a problem. Sit down and try to do something for myself and there’s a huge block somewhere in my head Anyway, I have a few things to sort out with the site but it’s nearly there now link it could be better but it’s a start.

So why a site other than this one, well, I wanted to keep all my woodworking separate and hopefully invite others who turn and carve to feature some of their work on the site or write a piece for the site. If you feel like writing something about wood carving or turning, maybe you want a image featured, just get in touch.

Completion

When I’m working on a site it’s fun, it’s also a case of looking forward to the time when it’s finished and I can move onto the next project. I was happy to complete this site Dai’s Forge (edit – this site is now no longer hosted or maintained by me) because it was the first time I’d had to change a site from a framed version which did not work well on widescreen monitors; and also the first time I’d had to integrate php and tie it in with a mysql database. So it’s a small beginning but at least the site works from a technical viewpoint. I just have to go back and tweak a few things graphically.

This is still a work in progress, one day it’ll be completed though

All the pieces of building a website appear fairly easy, if not a logical a..b…c…. however it’s knowing what b. means and why it has to come after a. that makes the difference. Creating a site that is visually appealing is not too difficult, creating one that’s both visually appealing and functional is a different matter
