These leaves caught my eye as I wandered through the wood and I decided to stop for a photograph, now I’m wondering if I should go draw them as well. For now I’ll print them out to fill a gap on the wall for a while.

Leaves, Trees, Fells and Stones

A mixed bag of images, mainly because the light kept changing and one minute you thought there wasn’t any point in carrying a camera and the next you couldn’t take enough photographs Anyway, my day started off taking photographs of leaves and trees by the pond, after a pause I was taking photographs at Long Meg and her Daughters stone circle, I ended the day taking a large panoramic of the Pennines…

I’ve been looking at trees lately, well, that’s no real surprise, I often look at trees. However I’ve been looking at them a bit closer than usual

Out on a wander earlier I noticed this leaf and how the colours were changing on it. I’m hopeful that if it’s an early Autumn we will get a mild Winter

Wandering round the garden this morning (after the fun job of cleaning out the chickens) and I started to pick up a few leaves. I wasn’t cleaning the garden or anything as radical as that, I was picking up any leaf that caught my eye. Returning to the house my intention was to take a few macro photographs of the leaves for a bit of fun however when I lay them on the table I decided to photograph them as they were –

As I was photographing them I wondered how they’d look sketched and painted so…

Now I just need to try a pen & ink drawing then maybe a digital version to cover a few different mediums

I was thinking of this painting while I was down in the wood earlier and scanned through my posts here to find it and couldn’t. So, here’s an old painting (well 2007) along with the poem that went with it.

And here is the poem…

LEAF BY GRAEME

If I could choose a leaf to paint
I’d paint a Leaf by Niggle
It wouldn’t be a sketchy scrawl
It wouldn’t be a squiggle

But with veins and pores and chlorophyl
A stem and ribs and branch
It would have a soft bright sheen
I’d not leave that to chance

Along one edge, I’d paint a drop
Of water sifting light
And beads of dew along the stem
Refracting morning light

It wouldn’t be just any leaf
But a bright green leaf by Niggle
So enchanting to the eye
You’d not suppress a giggle
Of delight
At such a sight

Around the leaf I’d paint a sky
A forest, a horizon
I’d paint brisk clouds layer upon layer
Such as you’d never set eyes on

A house, a path, a road, a train,
The moon, the stars, the sun
Your reflections in the water drop
A different one for each or you
There, it’s done
And just for fun

If finally, if you’d look close
You’d make out far away
A silhouette, with brush in hand
A little shy
Against the sky

Beyond the Leaf, the glade and sky
Just off the path and lost in thought
Admiring dewdrops on the grass
That’s where you’d find me.

Morning Mist, Leaves & General Distractions

This morning I went for a wander with the dog and the camera fully intending to take some reference photographs of horses. As I wandered along the lane I became more and more distracted with the mist and the leaves and the way the moisture clung to everything. I did take a horse photograph but it was in the end a distraction to the magic that mist can create.
