The 1st of January saw a nice alignment of Mars, Neptune and Venus along with the Moon just to keep them company. Not sure I picked Neptune up on these two shots, I didn’t enlarge and tweak them to see

The moment of eclipse

I’d been at work all night but decided to set an early alarm to see if the weather was being kind enough to allow a view of the eclipse. When I wandered to the window it was cloudy and my thoughts turned back to the land of nod, but Hugo was looking hopeful so I picked up the lead and my camera then headed out. I received regular texts from Julie that the sky was getting lighter and gaps appearing so I wandered a bit more, then the cloud parted just enough to see the eclipsed Sun.

There wasn’t much time but I did see it reflected in the pond and thought it worth a quick shot.

I’m not sure what Hugo thought of the whole event, but I’m claiming this as him showing some scientific curiosity.

Unfortunately it was all too brief and the Sun was getting brighter as the eclipse moved on.

I did manage one more of it reflected in the pond though

Decided to take the camera to work last night and snapped a couple of shots from the balcony…

A few hours later and I made another attempt at photographing Comet Ison as it was well above the horizon yet still stuck in the murk of Appleby’s light pollution. It took a bit of squinting at the screen but now I see it I know what to look for on the other shots

Finally on my way home, bleary eyed, I stopped to take a photo of the Moon as the Earthshine was rather strong this morning.

Early start today which was handy as it gave me chance to take a couple of astrophotography shots as comet Ison is up and about as well

We took a run down by Long Meg and her Daughters stone circle this evening as the sun was heading towards the horizon. I was nice to spend an hour or so wandering about with the Moon riding high above the stones and the sun setting behind the distant hills.

Brougham Castle

I paused briefly (it was too cold to linger) by Brougham Castle, Penrith, this morning as the Moon looked good behind it illuminating the river. I ended up having to put this image together from three different photographs to get close to what I actually saw.
