When we visited Long Meg last year and took a few photos (here), I intended to use a few of them as references for paintings, it took a while longer than anticipated to start but that’s the way things go anyway, this one may be finished. Or at least, it’s finished for now…

Still practicing, and again I picked a reference photo at random, this time it ended up with a photo I took of Julie back in May when it was a bit sunnier and a bit warmer

I enjoyed painting the folds in the dress, I disliked painting hair, but then I always dislike painting hair for some reason.

It feels like a while since I’ve managed to paint anything so I decided that I should practice a little, I wasn’t wanting to paint anything overly complicated on in depth but just wanted to get some paint down and break a little creative mind block The easiest solution I came up with was to gather a load of reference images together and pick one at random then have a go at it. So, I ended up with Crummock water and some reflections to attempt…

I thought I’d return to Oxford for a little bit of architectural paint time and found a photo I’d taken of the entrance to the Bodleian Library. The painting went well for a change, no issues along the way, that is until I started darkening the outside of the painting – the airbrush clogged, then splurted, then worked well but only for a few seconds…. So, it was either throw the painting into the bin or use photoshop to save it

I thought I’d paint another landscape as it’s been a while since I’ve worked on one, so I decided on the view looking down over Buttermere and Crummock. The intention when I started was to block a few areas in with acrylic to get the feel of the piece then finish it in oils, in the end I used acrylics for the entire painting as it was ‘working’ at the time. As with the majority of paintings I’ve completed for the last few years has soon as I signed it I didn’t like it Weird how the brain works sometimes.

The Arabian Knight

I should start by saying I’ve been under the weather since the weekend, coughing fits, breathless, dizzy… great fun really anyway I couldn’t settle sitting doing nothing at all but wasn’t fit to do any real work :-/ so I decided to finish of my Arabian Knight painting – it obviously took me two hours to paint one rock as I either had to stop and cough up a lung or wait while my nose stopped running.

Anyway, here’s the Arabian Knight –

Mainly gouache on watercolour board with a bit of digital touch up in Painter to add some dust and a lens flare type effect on the armour
