My ongoing obsession with painting Rivendell, based on Lauterbrunnen, continues This is version number…. okay I’ve stopped counting, the previous version I finished early December last year is still in the file marked ‘what was I thinking’. What I really need to do in order to paint Rivendell as I see it in my head is to learn French, take six months off work, then move into Lauterbrunnen with a few sketch pads and a gallon or two of paint.

I’ve been pondering Rivendell, or mainly the architecture of the main building, the only way I could really get it sorted in my head was to try and paint it. I had more fun doing the cliffs than the building itself – but that’s the way things go sometimes. I ended up using photoshop to correct a couple of bits of landscape and add some more mist.

Many moons ago I started work on an illustration, it was a simple idea, however the execution of the piece took a little longer than anticipated The theme I was working towards was Statuesque over on John Howe’s website – so I decided to illustrate the statue placed high above Rivendell to the memory of Celebrían, though the scene shown is many years after the last of the Elves had left for the West so the statue was in a poor state of repair….
