More stained glass practice… this time it was all joined by lead came rather than copper foil/solder. It proved harder than I thought it would mainly down to a problem with the lead came, the heart of the came was off centre so it ran off at odd angles and made it difficult to hold the glass in place. As it was only a practice piece I carried on rather than order new lead (which I should maybe have done), cementing was interesting and something I need to practice a fair bit more to get a result I’m happy with. But anyway, the final piece wasn’t too bad in the end.

I’ve wanted to try my hand at stained glass for a while, but a few things put me off, the main one being that I could never cut glass whenever I tried before the glass would break anywhere but the place I’d scored it. There was only one thing I could do, buy some glass and try again…. for some reason this time I tried the glass would break along the scored line nice and cleanly – I don’t know what I did differently but at least it worked Anway, Julie gave me a book of stained glass projects for Christmas along with a set of tools so I attempted the first project in the book. The soldering is a bit questionable in places and it may not be quite square but for a first attempt it’s not turned out too badly. All I need to do now is find a chain to dangle it off.

Sunsets and Stained Glass

Yesterday I took a few photographs of the Sun as it set behind a small Oak tree, but as I was tired I decided to leave the photographs until this morning to sort out. So, this morning I uploaded the photographs to the computer and looked at the thumbnails.

As I browsed the thumbnails I was struck by how much they reminded me of stained glass, with that thought lodged somewhere in my head I brought up photoshop and started to play, until I created a ‘Sunset Stained Glass’.

There are not many photographs this would work with really, but I quite like the effect this one gave. Here is the original photograph for comparison.

St Michael’s Church

This morning we stopped by St Michael’s Church near to Lowther Castle, we’ve driven and walked by it many times but never looked inside.It’ll be worth going back one day with a tripod, but I did manage a couple of photographs despite the low light levels this morning.
