I quite enjoyed painting the background, well rocks are always interesting to paint, but once the troll was on his seat I felt something wasn’t quite right. So I ended up finishing off the painting in Photoshop by adding the fire and smoke then darkening the left hand side of the image. For those that don’t know it the poem (which inspired this painting) it starts…

Troll sat alone on his seat of stone,
And munched and mumbled a bare old bone;
