We all know what a circle is, but I couldn&#8217;t remember the etymology of the word.<\/p>\n<p>The dictionary says a circle is<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span class=\"definition\">A round plane figure whose boundary (the circumference) consists of points equidistant from a fixed point (the centre) <\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"definition\">which sounds about right \ud83d\ude09 and the etymology (via etymonline.com) is<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>c.1300, &#8220;figure of a circle,&#8221; from Old French <span class=\"foreign\">cercle<\/span> &#8220;circle, ring (for the finger); hoop of a helmet or barrel&#8221; (12c.), from Latin <span class=\"foreign\">circulus<\/span> &#8220;circular figure; small ring, hoop; circular orbit&#8221; (also source of Italian <span class=\"foreign\">cerchio<\/span>), diminutive of <span class=\"foreign\">circus<\/span> &#8220;ring&#8221; (see circus).<\/p>\n<p>Replaced Old English <span class=\"foreign\">trendel<\/span> and <span class=\"foreign\">hring<\/span>. Late Old English used <span class=\"foreign\">circul<\/span>, from Latin, but only in an astronomical sense. Meaning &#8220;group of persons surrounding a center of interest&#8221; is from 1714 (it also was a secondary sense of Latin <span class=\"foreign\">circulus<\/span>); that of &#8220;coterie&#8221; is from 1640s (a sense also found in Latin <span class=\"foreign\">circulus<\/span>).
