This month over on the John Howe forum the theme of the month is Deco… ..adding beauty to function. While the functional aspect of the object remains, the representational side of ti is considered as an art form in itself. So I decided to paint a Hobbit’s pipe which had been carved with an ivy leaf pattern around the bowl.

Books, they open unexpected doors…
The theme of the month for July over on John Howe’s website is ‘Books‘, which started me thinking about books and what they mean to different people. To me they often open doors to unexpected places, or sometimes to expected places but where you often discover something new π So this is a composite in photoshop of a book opening a doorway into the Shire, with a willing Hobbit ready for a wander π

The other day I was sitting and thinking what scene from the Hobbit I would find niggling if it had been missed from the latest film. So, I flicked through the book and my mind turned to the scene with Bilbo returning home as it really was ‘back again’. I’d planned to paint the scene, but in the end pen & ink won for speed. I won’t comment as to whether the scene is in the film, you’ll have to watch it for yourself to find out π
