When I drew the convoluted roots, link, I had intended there being a background but got somewhat confused working out what went where. So, in the end I found it easier to draw the background separately and add it in Photoshop 😉

The theme this month over on John Howe’s website is “Interlace” which included… Celtic knot work theme this month. Something intertwined – it could be the intricate border of a manuscript or it could be braided hair or tree roots… Or both. So I decided to go with some tree roots in pen & ink to start me off….
