When I saw that this months theme over on John’s website was the Dark Side I was about to start on something from Star Wars. Then I thought there’s more dark sides around that we don’t instantly think about, such as Ted Sandyman, a shady character who ended up helping the wrong side when Saruman popped into the Shire. The last four months have been elemental themes over on John Howe’s website, so I decided at the start to do a segmented piece that would eventually come together at the end. The text was something relevant to do with the four elements from Ancient Greek which I decided to translate (don’t ask me why) into Klingon, strange what goes through your mind sometimes.

I’ve wanted to try my hand at stained glass for a while, but a few things put me off, the main one being that I could never cut glass 😉 whenever I tried before the glass would break anywhere but the place I’d scored it. There was only one thing I could do, buy some glass and try again…. for some reason this time I tried the glass would break along the scored line nice and cleanly – I don’t know what I did differently but at least it worked…

Tolkien and his works has been on my mind more than usual this week following the death of Christopher Tolkien, so I ended up scribbling Gandalf sketches, Gandalf hats, his staff…. you get the idea 😉 anyway, I decided I needed to practice sketching robes and folds in clothing a bit more so used the Hobbit movie poster as a reference for a Gandalf sketch. Now I need to start from scratch again and work on a larger Gandalf illustration, I just need to wake up and get some energy…
